Job Description:This salaried position is responsible for the physical upkeep, repair, and maintenance of the building and grounds, as well as the cleaning programs that keep Benchmark’s facilities in excellent condition. As head of the department, this individual is responsible for repairing physical structures of buildings, appliances within them, and creating and adhering to a deferred maintenance schedule. The Director of Facilities must respond to or delegate response to urgent needs 24/7.
Manage the physical operation of the entire school
Create and adhere to an annual budget, including a deferred maintenance schedule
Oversee and perform maintenance and improvement tasks related to HVAC, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, groundskeeping, painting, appliance repair, the outdoor pool etc.
Operate an electronic work order documentation system
Lead team meetings designed to ensure regular and open communication and team morale
Supervise staff members within the facilities department, including conducting work performance evaluations.
Monitor inventory for maintenance and housekeeping supplies. Communicate the need for inventory to the Facilities Department Custodian.
Pickup and delivery of supplies, equipment, furniture, appliances, and donations
Maintain daily security and safety protocol and aid the updates to the school’s crisis management plan, including reporting occurrences that are detrimental to health and safety.
Attend regular management team meetings as required
Pursue and keep up to date all required trainings, licenses, and certifications
Work with administration to ensure protocols exist and are adhered to per local, state, and federal law
Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in an appropriate manner with vendors, co-workers, staff, and management
Understand and respect cultural and learning differences
Assume responsibilities assigned by the Head of School
At least 2 years of College credit in engineering, construction management, or a related discipline preferred. GED or high school diploma required.
5+ years experience in more than 2 of the following trades: HVAC, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, construction, and landscaping
Strong supervisory and organizational skills experience
Prior experience in a school or similar setting preferred
Strong interpersonal skills
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, procedure manuals, building specs, safety rules, and maintenance instructions
Valid driver's license required
Physical Demands This is a physically demanding position. The employee must regularly lift 25 pounds, must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or free objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance.
Working Conditions Employee will be subject to outdoor weather conditions including rain and snow. Works daily with electric or gas cutting tools, drills, pressure washer, etc. Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. Noise level in the workplace is usually moderate to high, where hearing protection is required. Heavy Lifting is necessary on a regular basis. Employee is required to use personal protective equipment (PPE) as directed and provided by Benchmark School.
